Cute Facts About Cats

Did you know that cats are America’s most popular pet? There are 88 million pet kitties in the US, compared to 74 million dogs. While each one of those furballs has some unique quirks, they do share plenty of common traits. In fact, Fluffy is filled with interesting characteristics from nose to tail! Here, a local Marietta, GA vet lists some interesting facts about cats.

Paws For Thought

Did you know that cats can be left pawed or right pawed? Female cats are typically right-pawed, while boy kitties tend to be lefties.

Toes

Most cats have five toes on their back paws, but only four on their front. They’re all pretty sharp!

Belly Rub

If your cat rolls over onto her back and lets you rub her belly, you are loved. That furry tummy is Fluffy’s most vulnerable spot, and she only lets people she really trusts touch it.

Sleep

Kitties sleep about 16 hours a day, on average. However, senior cats and kittens sleep more than that. These drowsy furballs can sleep up to 20 hours a day. With kittens, this is helpful as feline growth hormones are released during sleep cycles. With older cats, we suspect it may have to do with the fact that Fluffy has most of her life practicing.

Purrfect Jump

Fluffy can jump five feet, or about seven times the length of her tail. That’s pretty impressive for a little furball!

Purrfection

Kitty purrs have some fascinating qualities. Cats purr at frequencies that stimulate healing and tissue growth. This may also be a way for Fluffy to calm herself when she is scared.

Tail Tales

About ten percent of Fluffy’s bones are in her tail. It may also interest you to know that only domestic kitties walk with their tails raised. Stray and feral cats let their tails droop behind them. This may be our furry friends’ way of saying ‘I’m taken.’

Fluffy’s Eyes

Our feline pals are a bit nearsighted. They also can’t see anything that’s right under their nose. Fluffy may actually be responsible for the saying ‘It’s right under your nose.’

Taste

Kitties can’t taste sweetness. They have less than 500 taste buds. In comparison, we have 9000, while Fido only has 1700.
